about

Serendipitous US–Finnish duo featuring nyckelharpa, 5-string fiddle, piano, and harmonium.

Drawn together by a shared love of Swedish folk fiddling and its rich harmonies, Juha and lydia offer joyful interpretations of traditional and modern tunes, along with their own trad-influenced compositions. Polskas, waltzes, schottises, marches!

Forests of birch trees are a striking feature of the Nordic landscape—along roadsides in southern Finland, lining impossibly steep ravines in northern Sweden—and they form a link to the northeastern US landscape as well, a thread that binds the countries where our music comes fom. “Koivu” = “birch” in Finnish.
